Wilmington Fire Department Battalion Chief Herman H. Born named Chief of the Ocean Isle Beach Fire Department

After twenty-one years with the Wilmington Fire Department, Battalion Chief Herman “Blue” Born is leaving the department to accept a position to lead the Ocean Isle Beach Fire Department Fire Department effective April 13, 2020.  Ocean Isle Beach Fire Department is a combination career and volunteer fire department originally established in 1976 and acquired by the town in 2008.

Battalion Chief Born, with over 30 years of fire service experience, began his career with the Wilmington Fire Department in February 1999 as a Captain and Fire Investigator in the Fire & Life Safety Division.  He was later promoted to Battalion Chief and Fire Marshall for that same Division.  Through the course of his career with the Department, Battalion Chief Born also served as Battalion Chief of Operations and Battalion Chief of the Training Division.

Born received an Associate Degree in Science for Business Management.  He later received his Associate Degree in Science in Fire Science Technology, a Bachelor of Science in Fire Science Administration and is actively working toward his MA in Organizational Leadership and Public Administration.

Wilmington Fire Chief Buddy Martinette said of Chief Born’s new role, “I have watched Chief Born work very hard over the years to gain both a formal education and varied experience in the fire service.  He has prepared himself well for the challenges associated with being a leader in his own organization.  I am proud of him and remain confident he will do well in his new role.”

Town Administrator of Ocean Isle Beach, Daisy Ivey states, “It is with great pleasure that the Town of Ocean Isle Beach welcomes Herman “Blue” Born as our new Fire Chief.  Born replaces Chuck Rash, a 20 Year veteran, who retired with the Department in December.  We are very excited to welcome Chief Born to our leadership team.  Born was one of fifteen applicants and three finalists.  He interviewed with a panel consisting of the Town Administrator, Mayor and two Town Commissioners.  The Town of Ocean Isle Beach Fire Department includes 12 Paid Firefighters, 5 Part-Time Engineers and several volunteers.”
