Recycling Flyer 2019

The recycling industry has been adjusting to changes since China introduced its National Sword policy in 2017. This policy has banned the importation of certain types of solid waste, as well as strict contamination limits on recyclable materials. Meaning they will not accept shipments that are the wrong type of recyclable or lower-quality recyclables like greasy paper goods. The ban on unprocessed plastics and mixed paper officially began January 1, 2018.

China has been the world’s largest importer of waste for decades. They have processed the waste for reuse in the products that they produce for export. Even though this policy is in place, China still has a high demand for our recyclable materials. So, instead of making the decision to stop recycling all together, we really just need to clean up our materials so that we have quality versus quantity.

To start this process, we need to get back to the basics and only put true recyclables in our bins. Numbers do not matter at this point, what we can process does. The material recovery facilities are working on adding new technology to their facilities that would include optical sorters and other machinery to help recognize contamination before it gets to the balers. This is great news but we as residents can help this process tremendously by educating ourselves on what is recyclable and what is not. Domestic processing of post-consumer and post-industrial recyclables are on the rise as well. This is going to help materials get pushed back into the economy as quality manufacturing feedstock. With all of these efforts combined, we can rebuild our recycling markets.
