Canal Dredging Project Update
The dredging has been completed on
Canal 14 (between Wilmington and Concord Streets), Canal 20 (adjacent to the
disposal site by Lee Street) and Canal 3 (Eastern Entrance to Concrete Canals
and a portion of the Canal located between Moore and Cumberland Streets).
Boats are now allowed to re-enter these areas.
I would like to take this opportunity
to thank the property owners on the Natural Canals for their cooperation during
this dredging project.

Canal Dredging Project Update
Canal 15 has been surveyed by the
Engineer and the Contractor has confirmed that all piping and equipment has been
removed from this canal. Therefore, boats are allowed to re-enter Canal 15 at
this time.
The Wildlife’s boat ramp has been
dredged, however it may be necessary that Marcol Dredging will revisit this area
to perform additional dredging. If the Contractor does return to this area,
pipeline would be crossing the entrance of Canals 15, 16, 17 and the Commercial
Canal. We will notify you of this schedule as soon as possible. All boaters
should proceed with caution when entering and leaving these canals. Boaters may
need to contact the Dredge directly to make arrangements for the pipe to be
lowered if necessary.

Canal Dredging Project Update
The dredging has begun in Canal 14
(between Wilmington and Concord Streets). The second dredge has finished Canal
20 (adjacent to the disposal site by Lee Street) and will begin in Canal 3
next. Canal 3 consists of the Eastern Entrance to Concrete Canals and a portion
of the Canal located between Moore and Cumberland Streets. Canal 15 (between
Fairmont and Wilmington Streets) is scheduled to be surveyed this week. It is
very important that boaters do not enter Canal 15 until the surveying has been
completed.

Canal Dredging Project Update
The Contractor
is currently dredging Canal 22 (Commercial Canal) and will remain in this canal
for an additional seven (7) or eight (8) days. The dredge will then move
to the North Carolina Wildlife Boat Landing while the Engineers are surveying
Canals 21, 22 and 23. It is anticipated the dredging of the boat landing
will be approximately two (2) to three (3) days. The dredge will then
proceed to Canal 14 approximately March 5th. The second dredge has been
utilized for pumping.

Canal Dredging Project Update
The dredging
has been completed in Canals 16 and 17. Both Canals 16 and 17 have been
surveyed by the Engineer and the Contractor has confirmed that all piping and
equipment has been removed from these canals. Therefore, boats are allowed
to re-enter Canals 16 and 17 at this time.
Canal 15 has
been dredged, however, this canal has not been surveyed. The Contractor
still has equipment and pipe in this canal. For these two reasons, it is
important that boaters do not enter Canal 15 at this time.
The Contractor
is currently dredging Canal 22 (Commercial Canal). The second dredge is
planned to begin working in Canal 20 adjacent to the disposal site at the
beginning of next week. If dredging conditions change, the second dredge
will be taken from dredging Canal 20, and be used as a booster pump for the
first dredge working in the Commercial Canal.
All boaters
should proceed with caution when entering and leaving all canals.
Currently pipeline extends from the Commercial Canal along the Intracoastal
Waterway all the way to the disposal site, so pipeline crosses the entrance of
each canal. It cannot be predicted at exactly what depth the pipe will be.
However, at times when dredging operations are on hold, the pipe is much more
likely to be at or near the surface.
Any time a
boater needs to enter or leave a canal, they need to touch base with the Dredge
directly so that they can lower the pipe if need be. Boaters are asked to
kindly contact the Dredge Operator for Marcol Dredging directly on Channel 66.
Also, the dredge operator can be contacted by phone at (910) 269-8427. By
the boater contacting the Dredge and reporting their intentions, the Dredge can
then determine if the pipeline will be a hazard and can shut down the dredge
plant so that the pipe can be lowered.

Canal Dredging Project Update
Dredging has been completed for Canals 16 and 17. Homeowners
will be allowed to return their boats back to Canal 17 after February 8th and to
Canal 16 after February 12th.
Marcol has brought in a second dredge that will be utilized as a
booster pump.
The
latest schedule and plan is to continue as follows:
Canal 15: Begin Saturday Feb. 2 and continue
until
Sunday, February 10.
Commercial Canal: Begin Monday Feb. 11,
expected duration 7-8 days.
When dredging begins on the
Commercial Canal, it will be necessary for the dredge pipe to be laid at the
mouths of the canals beginning at the Commercial Canal extending to the spoil
site.
After the dredging of these canals the plan could change,
however, it is likely that one dredge will return to Canal 15 to complete this
area, while the second dredge works adjacent to the disposal site.

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNERS
Canal Dredging Project Update
According to Marcol Dredging, there are
still five (5) boats in Canal 16 which impede dredging activities. Since
they planned to begin with this canal, they have moved their dredge and adjusted
their schedule. The dredging will now begin on Canal 17 on January 16th.
However there is still one (1) boat in the water at Canal 17 which will need to
be moved. After starting with Canal 17 tomorrow, they will move to either
the Commercial Canal or Canal 16, and then resume the schedule originally
submitted.
In order for the project to proceed without interruptions, it is
imperative that property owners remove all boats and secure loose items.
Boats on lifts that protrude past the dock line will interfere with the dredging
project and must be removed.

Canal Dredging Project Update
(Including Schedule and Cost Information)
The contract for the
2007 Maintenance Dredging project has been awarded to the low bidder – Marcol
Dredging Company, Inc. Marcol Dredging has mobilized to our area and
anticipates dredging will begin on Saturday, January 12th, depending
on completion of earthwork at the disposal area.
Marcol Dredging has indicated work will begin on January 12th
in Canal #16 (Between Monroe and Fairmont Streets) and then proceed
consecutively to the following canals. It should take approximately 7 to 10
days per each 2000 feet of canal.
Canal 17 (Between Monroe and Laurinburg)
Canal 22 (Commercial Canal)
Canal 21 (Canal westward of Laurinburg)
Canal 23 (Connector Canal between Canals 21
and 22)
It is possible
that a second dredge will be utilized simultaneously in the remaining canal
order.
Canal 15 (Between Fairmont and Wilmington)
Canal 14 (Between Wilmington and Concord)
Canal 8 (Western Entrance to Concrete
Canals)
Canal 3 (Eastern Entrance to Concrete
Canals and
portion of Canal located
between Moore and
Cumberland)
Canal 20 (Canal adjacent to Disposal Area)
It is very important that affected property owners take necessary
action immediately to secure any loose items and move all boats away from the
outside face of their docks.
The total cost
associated with this dredging is projected to be $1,078,929.36. Of this amount
the Natural Canal Tax District is responsible for $753,758.96. Other funds will
be paid as follows:
·
Town of Ocean Isle Beach – Payment of entire cost - $40,207.14
associated with Entrance Canals #8 and #3
·
Concrete Canal Special Tax District – Payment of -
$278,131.95
cost associated with Canal #20 (Adjacent to Disposal
Area as well as the portion of Concrete Canal #3
being dredged located between Moore and
Lumberton Streets)
·
Reimbursement for Wildlife Resources Commission -
$6,831.31
for Dredging at Boat Ramp
Photographs and
video of all canals will be taken prior to the beginning of construction.
Please remember the Town nor the contractor will be responsible for pilings not
properly installed. According to our engineer properly installed means that
pilings must be installed below the six (6) feet dredge limits. Canals will
be dredged to -6.0 mwl with widths varying from 20 to 40 feet depending on the
individual canals. A copy of plans is available for review at Town Hall between
the hours of 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
