BEACH RENOURISHMENT
Beach Renourishment Update January 10, 2007
Both the Federal and piggyback beach
renourishment projects have now been completed. We are very pleased with
the outcome and wish to express our appreciation to Norfolk Dredging and the
Corps of Engineers for making this project a reality. The
Federal project began at Shallotte Blvd. and continued westwardly to
immediately past Southport Street. The Piggyback project began at Shallotte
Blvd. and ran eastwardly for approximately 2000 feet. The Town will begin
planning immediately for the planting of beachgrass along the Federal
project. We will also make this grass available for those property owners
involved in the piggyback project. Sandfence will also be available for all
property owners located adjacent to the project. The first roll of
sandfence is free and each additional roll can be purchased at half-price.

Beach Renourishment Update -
November 1, 2006
The Town has
been informed by the Army Corps of Engineers that the Federal Beach
Renourishment project recently awarded to Norfolk Dredging, is scheduled to
begin at Ocean Isle Beach on November 16, 2006. This project will begin at
Shallotte Boulevard and run westwardly to an area immediately past Southport
Street. The project will place approximately 409,530 cubic yards of sand on
the beachfront in this location. The Town is also working with our engineer
to complete construction plans and specifications in regards to the Town’s
permit to place up to an additional 135,000 cubic yards of sand on the
extreme east end. This permit allows for the placement of sand beginning at
Shallotte Boulevard and continuing eastwardly up to a distance of 2,700
feet. Once these plans and specifications are completed, the Town will
submit them to Norfolk Dredging and request a price for construction of this
piggy back project. The Board will make a final determination in regards to
this separate project based on the proposal presented by Norfolk Dredging.

BEACH NOURISHMENT UPDATE - SEPTEMBER 29, 2006
On September 18, 2006,
the Wilmington District of the Army Corps of Engineers, awarded a
contract to Norfolk Dredging to perform beach nourishment projects at
Ocean Isle, Carolina and Kure Beaches. Construction is scheduled to
begin November 2006 and it is anticipated that the Dredger will begin
work at Ocean Isle Beach. However, a final decision on startup location
cannot be finalized until the Corps of Engineers conducts the
Pre-Construction Meeting with the Dredger.
The Corps estimated
non-federal share of this project for Ocean Isle Beach is $1.6 Million.
This amount has been provided to the Corps by the Town of Ocean Isle
Beach and the State of North Carolina. We look forward to the
commencement of this project.

U.S. Congressman Mike
McIntyre announced today that the scheduled nourishment of Ocean Isle Beach,
Carolina Beach and Kure Beach would move forward during the dredging season,
which opens this fall. Congressman McIntrye stated, “This is fantastic news
for these three coastal communities! Federal funds, combined with state and
local matches, will allow Ocean Isle Beach, Carolina Beach and Kure Beach to
receive the sand they need to protect our precious shoreline.”
On Wednesday of this week,
the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers received an acceptable bid from Norfolk
Dredging Company of Norfolk, Virginia, who will perform the three beach
nourishment projects. The Town of Ocean Isle Beach looks forward to the
construction of this project beginning in November. I would like to thank
the Mayor and Board of Commissioners, along with Congressman Mike McIntrye,
Senator Dole, Senator Burr and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for working
with the Town on this important project.
Updates to this site will
follow, as additional information is made available by the Corps of
Engineers.

Initial Renourishment Project - March 2002
On January 9, 2001 a Project Cooperation Agreement was executed between the
Federal Government and the Town of Ocean Isle Beach for a federally authorized
beach renourishment project. The project was awarded to Great Lakes Dredge
and Docks on February 22, 2001 and completed on May 7, 2001. The
authorized Federal project for Ocean Isle Beach provided for a berm and dune
fill with a dune elevation of 18.5 feet NGVD and berm elevation of 13.5 feet
along 28,000 feet of shoreline within the Town limits of Ocean Isle Beach.
This project protects approximately 3 1/4 miles of beach along the eastern
portion of Ocean Isle Beach and extends from approximately Shallotte Blvd. west
to approximately Duneside Drive. Over 1,952,600 cubic yards of sand were
placed along the beach strand during the initial construction phase of this
project. The vegetated stabilization of the dune with beach grass was
completed in March 2002.
The project provides for authorization of periodic beach nourishment projects to
be 50 years beginning at the initiation of construction. For initial
construction and each iteration of periodic nourishment, the Federal Government
participates 65% of the total cost with the project sponsor (Town of Ocean Isle
Beach) contributing 35% of the total cost.

participants involved in this project.
