New Exhibit at Museum of Coastal Carolina
The Museum of Coastal Carolina is celebrating the 35th anniversary
of America's Clean Water Act with the opening of its new exhibit,
Streams to the Sea. The exhibit debuted on October
19th and was funded
through a grant from the North Carolina Environmental Education
Centers, and generous donations from Betty Williamson & Williamson
Realty; and Aerial Photography.
The exhibit explains how stormwater runoff
pollutes streams and rivers from higher ground as it flows to the
Carolina Coast. Another part of the exhibit is an outdoor rain
barrel that catches rainwater from the Museum roof to water the
plants around the entrance. Rainwater flows over surfaces in
cities, farms & neighborhoods, it picks up dirt, oil, manure,
fertilizer, & trash carrying these pollutants to nearby rivers &
streams. Pollution travels by water and over land into the sea.
This type is called non-point source pollution or stormwater
runoff.
Stormwater runoff is the leading water
pollutant in the Coastal Carolina region. Groundwater is
water that moves through soil and then through pores and cracks in
bedrock. It gravitates slowly to lower elevations, and may
eventually enter a lake, river or stream. Groundwater is usually
clean because soil and rock filter out pollutants. Salt
marshes are very important and are now projected by the Clean
Water Act. Salt marshes are one of the most biologically
diverse and productive habits on the planet, even rivaling
tropical rainforests.
Learn how you can help prevent stormwater
runoff at the Museum of Coastal Carolina's newest exhibit.

LECTURE SERIES
|
|
Alexandra Tempsick, new director of the Lecture
Series, has announced on behalf of The Museum of Coastal Carolina
the Evening Lecture Series has been renamed in memory of the
late Bruce Porter. Along with Museum Founder Stuart Ingram, Mr.
Porter was instrumental in starting the lecture series. He
passionately and tenaciously sought out expert speakers on topics
of interests to him, local residents, and visitors. Bruce Porter
was a lifelong learner and held lifelong friendships with his
fellow West Point graduates. He was well-traveled and loved
sailing and boating. With memorial gifts from his family and
friends, the Museum purchased a public address system for the
Museum lecture hall. Ms. Tempsick stated "We want to
continue Bruce's tradition of obtaining great speakers about
interesting topics for the Bruce Porter Lecture Series. This year
we have programs scheduled with local, national & international
interest."
The upcoming schedule for the Bruce Porter Lecture Series at
the Museum of Coastal Carolina is as follows:
| Tuesday, May 13th |
History of Ocean Isle Beach |
Dr. Fred David will present the
History of Ocean Isle Beach
from 10,000 BC to Today. |
| Tuesday, June 10th |
Sea Turtle Conservation
|
Gloria Hillenburg, Coordinator |
On lecture evenings, the Museum opens at 6:30 p.m. for
self-guided tours before the program begins at 7 p.m. Admission is
$8 for adults, $6 for senior adults age 60 & over, $6 students
K-12 & College ID, and $4 Preschool ages 3-5.

Senator Soles Visits Museum and Planetarium
During a former visit Senator R. C.
Soles stated the Museum of Coastal Carolina was the “best kept
secret in the state of North Carolina.” During his recent visit
tour to the Museum and Ingram Planetarium led by Executive
Director Scott Kucera, Senator Soles learned about the future
plans and equipment needed to enhance the programs and services
offered to students, residents, and vacationing families.
Brunswick County is fortunate to have these excellent
educational facilities and is one of only five counties in the
state to have both a natural history museum and a planetarium.
Senator R. C. Soles has supported
education in Brunswick County and Southeastern North Carolina
for many years. He also supports grant funding for the NC
Grassroots Science Museums Collaborative (GSMC). The Museum of
Coastal Carolina and Ingram Planetarium have been members of
GSMC since 1997. The Collaborative promotes science and
technology education throughout North Carolina. The website is
www.grassroots-science.org.

Saturday, May 17th-8pm- Awards ceremony
The concept of this format is to offer more possible days to
fish and thus increase the chances of
being able to fish under good weather conditions. Also, with the
earlier dates, there should be
more Carolina Slams caught and better overall fishing.
**** Rule Clarification****
You can fish 2 days total, thus you may drop a previous day's
biggest
fish with your 2nd day's fish-- still only 1 fish per species,
but the largest of each species you catch
out of the 2 days. Also, a boat may participate under only one
entry and a Captain may only be
registered as a Captain once. However, any fisherman, whether
Captain or crew may fish on more
than one boat as many days of competition as he/she chooses.
** Boundary clarification** You must fish
between longitude 78.40.00 (G.town hole area) and
76.55.00 (Nipple area)

to be kept at the OIFC. ***
(above prizes based on 40 boat entries)
The Far Out Shoot out is geared toward the
small Gulf Stream boater with average boat
sizes typically between 25 - 32ft. The Far Out Shoot Out
provides Gulf Stream fishermen
the opportunity to work with other local Captains to improve
techniques as well as add the
comfort of having friends around while fishing offshore. The
tournament is highlighted by
the traditionally excellent Yellowfin Tuna, Wahoo, and Dolphin
fishing.
ATTENTION NOVICE GULF STREAM FISHERMEN- This
is an excellent chance to learn more
about Gulf Stream chartering as you will have opportunity to mix
and mingle with many of
the area's top offshore fishermen. In addition, you'll have
plenty of company for the long
ride offshore to help insure your safety and give piece of
mind.
